Psalm 113

¹Praise the Lord.^[a]^(A)

Praise the Lord, you his servants;^(B)
    praise the name of the Lord.
²Let the name of the Lord be praised,^(C)
    both now and forevermore.^(D)
³From the rising of the sun^(E) to the place where it sets,
    the name of the Lord is to be praised.

⁴The Lord is exalted^(F) over all the nations,
    his glory above the heavens.^(G)
⁵Who is like the Lord our God,^(H)
    the One who sits enthroned^(I) on high,^(J)
⁶who stoops down to look^(K)
    on the heavens and the earth?

⁷He raises the poor^(L) from the dust
    and lifts the needy^(M) from the ash heap;
⁸he seats them^(N) with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
⁹He settles the childless^(O) woman in her home
    as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

Jacob and Esau

¹⁹This is the account^(A) of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, ²⁰and Isaac was forty years old^(B) when he married Rebekah^(C) daughter of Bethuel^(D) the Aramean from Paddan Aram^[a]^(E) and sister of Laban^(F) the Aramean.^(G)

²¹Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless.^(H) The Lord answered his prayer,^(I) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. ²²The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.^(J)

²³The Lord said to her,

“Two nations^(K) are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.^(L)”

²⁴When the time came for her to give birth,^(M) there were twin boys in her womb.^(N) ²⁵The first to come out was red,^(O) and his whole body was like a hairy garment;^(P) so they named him Esau.^[b]^(Q) ²⁶After this, his brother came out,^(R) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel;^(S) so he was named Jacob.^[c]^(T) Isaac was sixty years old^(U) when Rebekah gave birth to them.

²⁷The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,^(V) a man of the open country,^(W) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. ²⁸Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,^(X) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.^(Y)

The Supremacy of the Son of God

¹⁵The Son is the image^(A) of the invisible God,^(B) the firstborn^(C) over all creation. ¹⁶For in him all things were created:^(D) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;^(E) all things have been created through him and for him.^(F) ¹⁷He is before all things,^(G) and in him all things hold together. ¹⁸And he is the head^(H) of the body, the church;^(I) he is the beginning and the firstborn^(J) from among the dead,^(K) so that in everything he might have the supremacy. ¹⁹For God was pleased^(L) to have all his fullness^(M) dwell in him, ²⁰and through him to reconcile^(N) to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,^(O) by making peace^(P) through his blood,^(Q) shed on the cross.
